Annie Courtney is a former nationalist politician in Northern Ireland. After studying in Derry and Edinburgh, Courtney became a nurse back in Derry. She also joined the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), was elected to Derry City Council in 1985, and served as Mayor of Derry in 1993. Courtney retired from nursing in 1997.〔(Biography - Annie Courtney MLA, Northern Ireland Assembly )〕 When SDLP leader John Hume resigned from the Northern Ireland Assembly, effective from December 2000, Courtney was co-opted as his replacement, representing Foyle.〔"(Courtney takes up Hume's assembly seat )", ''The Irish Times'', 11 December 2000〕 Courtney was keen to contest the Northern Ireland Assembly election, 2003 for the party, but did not gain the SDLP's nomination. As a result, she resigned from the party in April 2003 and instead sat as an independent.〔"(Annie Courtney resigns from SDLP )", 4NI.co.uk, 1 April 2003〕 Courtney stood as an independent in the election,〔"(Courtney stands as independent )", BBC News〕 but took only 802 votes and was not elected.〔(Foyle 2003 ), Northern Ireland Elections〕 ==References==
